So last Monday Bug announced that she was no longer going to wear diapers. Great! She did very well during the week with only a handful of accidents--mostly #2. Nighttime has been a dilemma. Knowing she is accustomed to drinking water at bedtime and even after bedtime with a cup in her room, she never stays dry through the night. So, do we put her in a diaper and risk her thinking she can go back and forth between going in the diaper and going in her pants? Or do we continue to use the more expensive pull-ups knowing that they will inevitably be wet in the morning with the same risk as diapers? Do we cut off her access to water at night with the risk that she will act out and refuse to use the potty? It is SO hard to know what the right thing is to do. I am trying to downplay accidents, praise her potty efforts, and encourage her to use the potty anytime she is awake even if it is during the night. The past couple of days she has tried to revert back, saying she wants to wear diapers and wait until she is bigger for pull-ups. I want potty training to be her thing, but I also don't want to flip flop between diapers and the potty on her whims. So, I am reminding her that she decided to stop wearing diapers and putting her in pull-ups. Hopefully my poker face of confidence will work...
Not wanting to get into the cycle of giving rewards each time she uses the potty I have opted instead for a family celebration each evening that she has a good day going on the potty. So far that has proven to be a good incentive. Since she rarely gets sweets, she looks very forward to the small, uniced sugar cookie she usually gets for our celebration. We have also used carbonated fruit-flavored water. I bought some Fruit Loops that I also thought would be very fun and not terribly unhealthy.
I never dreamt I would think or talk this much about bathroom matters...
